    My Life and Family

I'm a retired emergency planner for the gas and electric public utility on Long Island, New York. I'm a graduate of Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania. My husband, Charlie, is and engineer and retired from Grumman. We have two daughters and five grandchildren.

    My Interests and Ancestors

My first interest is computers, but I've been doing genealogy research since I discovered how easy it was to record the information with the current programs. This was made even easier with the genealogy research done by my great grandmother, Amelia Maria (Carter) Kennedy. On September 14, 1909, Amelia wrote to her daughter about the success of her genealogy research and in a post script she added, "The day will come when it will be appreciated, I know." That day has arrived!
My great grandmothers, Amelia Maria Carter and Mary Eliza Barker.
Above is a picture of my great grandmothers, Amelia Maria Carter on the left and Mary Eliza Barker, probably when they were at the East Greenwich Seminary (later called East Greenwich Academy) in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. The information on an 1867 letterhead (click here to see the illustration of the building) said it "Furnishes sound instruction in the Languages, Mathematics, Sciences, English Branches, Drawing and Painting, a Commercial College Course and a Course in Music. A Home School for both sexes, at rates within reach of the people." Amelia graduated in 1865. They both taught before marrying. Amelia's daughter Kathrine May Kennedy married Mary Eliza's son William Anthony Sherman.

In March of 1996 I "found" via the Internet Bob Carter, a third cousin. We are related through Amelia Maria Carter. After she wrote by hand 147 pages of Carter genealogy in the notebook that Bob's family has, she made several more copies; two of which are in my mother's family. Visit Bob Carter's Genealogy Home Page for links to his information on Amelia Carter's descendants, and ancestors back to Thomas Carter the blacksmith. For genealogy information on the area where she lived, see the USGenWeb Project page for Lackawanna County in Pennsylvania.
