| Washington Square, probably in the late 1800's. This appears to be a funeral with at least one hearse. The horse fountain is in the center right, and the statue of Oliver Hazard Perry is in the park. On Touro Street at the right can be seen the pillared St. Joseph's Church, now a theater. | This early photo has the date on the back of September 21, 1864. I think the writing on the side of the wagon (enlarged in the corner) says, "Wm. C. Cozzens & Co.; Dry Goods & Carpet Warehouse; No. 72 Thames St." On the right is an advertisement from an 1871 Newport guide. | |
